You Are Already a Cyborg

My First Telescope : A Refractor 70 x 700mm Meade $130
Purchase in 2004 at Kits Camera to Examine Celestial Objects
Analog pure optics of meta glass & plastic!
In your digital footprint exists evidence of your hybridization as a cyborg interacting with technology. Tech that changes the ways you are able to see and think about anything! Unlocking unlimited potential, information technology transforming society more than any other innovations! AI the outward digital manifestation of human consciousness into increasingly thoughtful machines. Say hello to Siri, Cortana, Alexa or Google Now!

Facebooking, tweeting, blogging, searching online, your digital footprint and browser cookies, the metadata that PRISM collects from you, you already exist as hybrid between digital ai technology and human consciousness, you are therefor already a cyborg!

IoT

Smart (networked) lightbulbs, appliances, hover boards, MiP robots, WiFi, LTE, Bluetooth LE, and NFC, Ant+, high bandwidth radio data connected life, we already already living in the future, one that was long ago envisioned by technology futurists.

Pervasive AI already!

Today AI technology is at the forefront of the discourse about vehicles that drive, pilot, fly themselves with intelligent network connected AI based autopilot, sensor infused vehicles like the Tesla Model S leveraging more technology than many smartphones. Notably present in the Model S and largely absent from smartphones, powerful LIDAR, SONAR, RADAR, synthetic vision digital imaging technologies that go way beyond capturing selfies with an optical camera operating in the visible spectrum.

Tools Extending Vision

At the best with your phone you can plug a Seek Thermal camera into the charging data IO port (Lightning, Micro-usb) to see digital imaging in the infrared *heat* spectrum that extends human vision into other frequencies of light perception. FLIR a powerful tool for building energy optimization, thermal engineering of computers of all kinds, being able to see heat gives people new ways of thinking about everything.

Galactic vs Microscopic

Speaking of seeing beyond the limits of human vision, have you ever considered what telescopes & microscopes have done to change the ways the people are able to see the world around us? How about the space telescope images from NASA captured by the Hubble; how these images have changed the ways that you see the universe, yourself or the world around you! Microscopes allowed people to discover bacteria, transforming medicine, biology, cell theory, ultimately leading to the discovery of DNA!

Really Small

It took a long time to go from making glass lens to seeing with a scanning tunneling electron microscope, today we living beyond the era of cryogenic fluids, past the space race, well into the 3rd major paradigm of industrialization, known as the information age, it going started with building sized mainframe digital computers in the 1960s that were less computationally powerful than the first iPhone!

Smaller Thinking

Miniaturization was the Moores law of integrated circuit design, it was not the transistors that made the real difference, it was how they are connected, something that Robert Noyce realized when he founded Intel! Today Intel dominates X86 processors with their greatest i7 Kaby Lake line at optimized 14nm node, while ARM holdings designs the low powered chipsets galore in our hand held computers (smartphones), smart watches, IoT devices, wifi routers, touch controllers, etc), but ARM is a fabless semiconductor company while Intel is highly vertically integrated.

Good GPU action often in the same package!
Corporate vertical integration is not a perfect solution as communication breakdowns in large tall organizational structures ultimately giving rise to the Samsung Note 7 fire debacle. Samsung is one of the most highly vertically integrated companies in the world, even existing with a revolving door between the upper management and the South Korean government! I am sure that heads will roll literally over the Note 7 debacle due to the subsequent share price tanking (-$16 billion) and multi billion dollar capital losses associated with recalling millions of these stare of the art high end smartphones (-$2 billion)

People

We are each finite, tiny, temporary and fragile! Human life contains a subtle super complexity and beauty if you stop to consider how we each self assemble from a single cell into a system of systems supporting self awareness, consciousness and thinking! Though the greatest skill of humanity! This is part of why I named by blog Thinking About It ! The founder of IBM, Tomas Watson Jr is one of my heroes, the IBM System 360 a $5 billion dollar gamble that ultimate paved the water for the AI super computer we know today as Watson!

The IBM Watson | Power 7 Servers
Watson

Built with IBM's DeepQA technology (generate hypotheses, gathering massive evidence, analyzing the data) utilizing a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers, each with a 3.5 GHz POWER7 eight-core processor & four threads per core.  The $3 million system has 2,880 POWER7 processor threads + 16 terabytes of RAM. Watson can process 500 gigabytes (1million books) per second.

Linpack rated at 80 TeraFLOPs, the data it analysis is held in Ram because the HDD' are too slow!
The data sources of information for Watson include encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, newswire articles, and literary works. Watson also used databases, taxonomies, and ontologies. Specifically, DBPedia, WordNet, and Yago. The IBM team provided Watson with millions of other reference material data source that it could use to build its knowledge.

A knowledge engine, just like our brain, but way more powerful, its electrical demands are also amazing. IBM wants to shrink this system to the size of a Pizza box by the year 2020! IBM already has a Fridge sized blade server version with 1536 cores, running 3,072 thread simultaneously on data held in 6TB of DRAM, consuming only 60w of power. In late 2017 IBM hopes to show off a new generation that does just as much knowledge computing using only 35w of power, dividing the workflow across many low power CPU's the technical trick to super computer function with tiny electrical loads, parallel computing the key innovation! 98% of the power currently used to move data between board components, the actually logic uses tiny amount of power! The R&D team is focused on miniaturizing the system as much as possible.
